Our team supported the delivery of the $22 million Belconnen Trunk Sewer – a critical infrastructure upgrade to boost wastewater capacity for Canberra’s growing northern suburbs.
We worked with AECOM and Icon Water on the multi-year project, which required careful coordination across planning, design, environmental approvals, construction and close-out.
Scope of works
- Design and construction of a 2.4 km DN1200 GRP gravity sewer
- Construction of four odour control units with cartridge-based carbon media systems
- Installation of fans, vent stacks and housing for odour control facilities
- Construction of a 170 m steel pipe bridge over Ginninderra Creek
- Full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and environmental compliance management
- Community and stakeholder engagement
- Contract administration, surveillance and project close-out
BMCA played key roles throughout the project. One of our team members, formerly of Icon Water, led concept and design phases, managing environmental approvals, governance and community engagement.
Embedded as superintendent during design finalisation and construction, we strengthened contract management and stakeholder coordination, while also supported site surveillance and oversaw handover and close-out.
The project navigated sensitive environmental issues, protecting endangered grasslands, relocating Golden Sun Moth larvae and monitoring water quality during pipe bridge construction over Ginninderra Creek.
Ultimately, BMCA’s leadership, collaborative problem-solving and embedded support were critical to delivering this complex infrastructure upgrade. The project not only strengthened Canberra’s sewer network but also demonstrated a commitment to environmental stewardship.
