Our team provided expert design and constructability review services for the ACT Government’s City West Bus Layover project – supporting Transport Canberra and City Services to deliver critical public transport infrastructure in a constrained urban setting.
Located near the ANU and Sullivans Creek, the new layover enhances bus operations by creating additional capacity close to the City Centre, reducing reliance on the busy City Interchange.
Our team worked closely with design consultants and government stakeholders to review documentation, assess construction feasibility and provide practical advice on delivering works within a tight urban footprint.
BMCA’s early involvement helped identify and resolve potential challenges around shared path closures and diversions, works within the urban waterway and unplanned service conflicts – including unrecorded Icon Water assets and power supply tie-ins. We also contributed to solutions for the safe relocation of unplanned fauna found onsite.
Key project elements
- A layover facility with capacity for 25 buses
- A 54m² amenities building with kitchen and rest areas for drivers
- Stormwater detention infrastructure to manage flood risk from Sullivans Creek
- New power and water connections across a complex utility environment
- Noise and light mitigation measures to minimise impacts on nearby residents and path users
We played a key role in facilitating coordination between key stakeholders including EPSDD, Evoenergy, Urban Treescapes and Icon Water, while also supporting engagement with transport workers and path users during periods of disruption.
By integrating design insights with practical construction advice, we helped ensure the project could be delivered efficiently and with minimal impact to the community or surrounding natural environment.
BMCA’s review services strengthened the project’s delivery readiness – de-risking construction and supporting the ACT Government’s goal of a more reliable, connected transport system.
