BMCA played a lead role as Principal’s Authorised Person (PAP) and lead consultant on the $22 million Gundaroo Drive Stage 2 duplication, a critical upgrade to enhance safety and connectivity for over 40,000 daily road users.
The project involved duplicating 2.4 kilometres of roadway and shared path, constructing a new plank bridge, and extending two existing Bebo arch bridges. BMCA engaged AECOM as a sub-consultant for landscape architecture, structural engineering and pavement design.
Scope of works
- Duplication of the 2.4 km carriageway between Barton Highway and Stage 1
- Construction of a new plank bridge and extension of existing Bebo arch bridges
- Major relocations of utilities, including high-pressure gas, telecommunications, power and sewer infrastructure
- Installation of street lighting, landscaping, and active travel infrastructure such as on- and off-road cycling paths, accessible kerb ramps, tactile ground surface indicators and upgraded bus stops with signage and furniture
- Traffic management and staging to maintain safe access for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and public transport
Throughout construction, our team managed complex challenges including utility relocations, traffic staging, and coordination with multiple stakeholders such as Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS), Pedal Power and the local community. Our strong on-site presence and collaborative approach enabled timely issue resolution, keeping the project on schedule and within the approved budget.
This successful outcome was supported using our custom-built ConstructionEye software, which captured daily surveillance observations on environmental, safety and quality performance. The platform gave clients and designers remote visibility of site activity, reducing the need for frequent travel and enabling faster decision-making.
